What it is

The starting point for any mole or lesion concern.

A mole assessment is a structured 30-minute appointment with a GMC-registered consultant during which the lesion (or lesions) you're concerned about are examined visually and using dermatoscopy, a magnification technique that reveals structural details invisible to the naked eye.

It is the diagnostic foundation for everything else we offer: cosmetic removal, suspect-mole excision, total-body mole mapping, biopsy referral. By the end of the appointment you'll know what the lesion is, whether it needs treatment, and what your options are, in plain language, with a written report to take away.

Understanding the assessment

What an assessment actually involves.

A short read through how the appointment works, what dermatoscopy can and can't tell us, and the realistic outcomes you should expect.

Which appointment do you actually need?

The most common question we get is the difference between a Cosmetic Consultation (£100) and a Skin Cancer Check (£250). Both are mole assessments, same consultant, same dermatoscope, same standard of care, but the framing and depth differ.

A Cosmetic Consultation is for patients who already know the lesion is benign and want to discuss removal options. We confirm low-risk on the day with dermatoscopy, agree the technique that produces the best cosmetic result, and proceed to same-day removal where appropriate. The £100 fee is consultation-only; removal fees apply separately.

A Skin Cancer Check is the more thorough diagnostic appointment for any patient worried about a specific mole or wanting comprehensive screening. It includes a wider visual scan of the surrounding skin and a written report, and is the right starting point if you're not sure what category your concern falls into. If we recommend cosmetic removal at the end of a Skin Cancer Check, the £250 fee covers the assessment in full.

Why magnification changes the diagnosis

Dermatoscopy is a polarised, high-magnification examination of the skin surface. A specialist lens, the dermatoscope, eliminates surface reflection and reveals the pigment networks, vascular patterns and structural features sitting just below the visible top layer of skin. These deeper structures are invisible to the naked eye, but they're often what distinguishes a benign mole from an early melanoma.

Naked-eye examination by a trained dermatologist is reasonably accurate. Dermatoscopy adds another step-change in accuracy. Studies repeatedly show that dermatoscopy plus expert eye outperforms expert eye alone, particularly for catching early, structurally subtle melanomas that haven't yet developed obvious clinical signs.

Every mole assessment at our clinic uses dermatoscopy as standard, and we'll show you what we see during the appointment so the decision-making isn't a black box.

What we can recommend at the end of the appointment

There are five realistic outcomes from a mole assessment, in rough order of frequency. **Reassure**, most lesions turn out to be benign with no concerning features; we explain what they are and confirm no action is needed. **Monitor**, borderline lesions where the right call is photograph, document, and re-check in 3–6 months rather than excise unnecessarily.

**Cosmetic removal**, the lesion is benign but you'd like it gone; same-day or scheduled depending on time and complexity. **Excise with histology**, anything dermatoscopically suspicious is removed in full thickness and sent to the lab for definitive diagnosis. **Refer for mole mapping**, if you have many moles, fair skin, atypical naevi or a melanoma family history, the right next step is total-body imaging rather than another point-in-time check.

Whatever the outcome, you leave with a written report within 24 hours and a clear sense of what (if anything) needs to happen next.

What it costs and how to book

Pricing is fixed and self-pay only, no insurance paperwork, no pre-authorisation, no surprise bills. Cosmetic Consultation £100, Skin Cancer Check £250, Total-Body Mole Mapping from £250. If we recommend same-day removal, the relevant excision fee applies in addition; histology, if needed, is billed separately by the lab (typically £85–£150).

You don't need a GP referral to book, self-refer directly online or by phone. With your consent, we'll send a copy of your assessment report and any histology results to your GP for their records, so primary care has continuity if you need it later.

If you're unsure which appointment to book, the safe default is the Skin Cancer Check. It's the thorough diagnostic option and converts easily into removal if that's what's needed on the day.

When to book

You should book an assessment if any of these apply.

"Excellent service, and care. I had a wart removal on my eyelid, procedure was quick and pain free (even that I was a little bit scared). Dr Mohsan, Kay (assistant), Aoife (receptionist) were very professional and reassuring. I highly recommend this clinic."

"Thank you Dr Reza and Kay for being amazing. I've always wanted my mole removed and thought long and hard about it and put the time in to research where to go as it is a big deal when it's on your face. I made the right decision! Incredibly professional, did a wonderful job and really helpful with the aftercare. This is a 5 star review as it was a 5 star job. If you're thinking about braving it, get it done. So happy with the results!"

"I thought I would wait a few weeks before doing a review, so I could give a proper account. I had a Seborrheic Keratoses growth on the side of my face that had been bothering me for 2-3 years. I had tried all the usual creams to no effect. I decided to take the plunge and get it removed and opted for the clinic based on previous reviews. The whole process was very professional from start to finish, and the process, and what I could expect, were clearly described to me. Four weeks later I'm wondering why I didn't do it sooner, it's also been a tremendous confidence booster. The process was quick and painless, and after a few weeks of healing it has all but disappeared. I'm very happy with the results. I will definitely go back for a few other bits and bobs that need sorting."

"Really fantastic experience. It can be nerve-wracking coming along for something like this (lesion removal) but Dr Georgios was incredibly sensitive, kind and thorough in explaining my options and I felt very reassured and relaxed throughout. I didn't feel a thing during the procedure and it was all so easy and efficient! The nursing and admin staff were fantastic and friendly too. Highly recommended and I'm so glad I made that booking!"

"Super efficient and reliable. Before even going to my appointment my emails and queries were replied to very quickly. I went to have a mole removed and the environment was so friendly; Angelica the receptionist was so welcoming and both the assistant Kay and Dr Sarah made me feel very comfortable. The procedure was quick and all of my questions answered. I know I can come back should anything go wrong. Would definitely recommend!"

Common questions

Mole assessment FAQs.

A standard mole assessment is a 30-minute appointment. Total-body mole mapping takes around 60 minutes because of the photographic process.

A cosmetic consultation (£100) is for patients who want a benign-looking mole removed for aesthetic reasons. A skin cancer check (£250) is a more thorough diagnostic appointment for patients worried about a specific mole or wanting comprehensive full-body screening.

Only if dermatoscopy flags concern that can't be resolved visually. Biopsy is performed as a full-thickness excision (rather than punch or shave) so the lab gets a complete sample. We'll only recommend it where it's clinically necessary.

No. The assessment itself is non-contact and painless. If you proceed with same-day removal, that's done under local anaesthetic.

No. Self-refer directly. With your consent we'll send the report to your GP for their records.

Avoid makeup, fake tan or nail polish on the area you want examined. A list of moles you've noticed changing is useful but not required.

If you have more than ~30 moles, fair skin or a melanoma history, total-body mole mapping is usually a better starting point than a standard assessment, book that instead.
