What it is

The starting point for any mole or lesion concern.

A mole assessment is the umbrella appointment we recommend when you don't yet know what you need. At our two London clinics — Harley Street in the W1 medical district, and our City rooms two minutes from Mansion House — a consultant takes a focused history, examines the lesion you're worried about, and uses digital dermatoscopy to look at the structure beneath the surface. You leave with a clear written plan: watch and wait, full-body mole check, excision with histology, or cosmetic removal.

Most London patients book this when one specific mole has changed and they're not sure if it's serious, when several moles have appeared in adulthood, or when they want a single expert opinion before committing to anything. The appointment is 30 minutes; the written summary is in your inbox within 24 hours; and where action is needed we can usually book the next step at the same clinic without a second consultation fee.

Both clinics share the same consultants, the same dermatoscopes, and the same UKAS-accredited pathology lab where samples are needed. Pick whichever London location is more convenient — there is no difference in standard or pricing between Harley Street and the City.

Understanding the assessment

What an assessment actually involves.

A short read through how the appointment works, what dermatoscopy can and can't tell us, and the realistic outcomes you should expect.

Which appointment do you actually need?

The most common question we get is the difference between a Cosmetic Consultation (£100) and a Skin Cancer Check (£250). Both are mole assessments, same consultant, same dermatoscope, same standard of care, but the framing and depth differ.

A Cosmetic Consultation is for patients who already know the lesion is benign and want to discuss removal options. We confirm low-risk on the day with dermatoscopy, agree the technique that produces the best cosmetic result, and proceed to same-day removal where appropriate. The £100 fee is consultation-only; removal fees apply separately.

A Skin Cancer Check is the more thorough diagnostic appointment for any patient worried about a specific mole or wanting comprehensive screening. It includes a wider visual scan of the surrounding skin and a written report, and is the right starting point if you're not sure what category your concern falls into. If we recommend cosmetic removal at the end of a Skin Cancer Check, the £250 fee covers the assessment in full.

When to book

You should book an assessment if any of these apply.

  • 01

    A new mole

Any new mole appearing in adulthood, particularly after the age of 30, warrants assessment.

  • 02

    A changing mole

A mole that has changed size, colour, shape or texture over weeks or months.

  • 03

    Symptoms

Any mole that itches, bleeds, oozes, scabs over or becomes tender to touch.

  • 04

    Family history

A first-degree relative with melanoma, or a personal history of skin cancer or significant sun exposure.

  • 05

    Cosmetic concerns

Moles you'd like removed for aesthetic reasons, assessment confirms the lesion is suitable for cosmetic-only removal.

  • 06

    Annual peace of mind

Yearly mole assessments are recommended for high-risk patients and anyone wanting a baseline.

What to expect

A clear, structured 30-minute appointment.

  1. 01

    History

Brief discussion of your skin history, family history, sun exposure, and the specific moles you're concerned about. Tell us about anything that's changed.

  2. 02

    Visual examination

Visual inspection of the lesion(s) of concern. If clinically appropriate, we'll also scan the surrounding skin for anything else worth examining.

  3. 03

    Dermatoscopy

Each lesion of concern is examined with a high-magnification dermatoscope. We'll show you what we see and explain the findings using the ABCDE framework.

  4. 04

    Plan & report

We'll talk you through findings and recommendations, monitor, remove cosmetically, excise with histology, or refer for mole mapping. A written report is sent within 24 hours.

"Excellent service, and care. I had a wart removal on my eyelid, procedure was quick and pain free (even that I was a little bit scared). Dr Mohsan, Kay (assistant), Aoife (receptionist) were very professional and reassuring. I highly recommend this clinic."

"Thank you Dr Reza and Kay for being amazing. I've always wanted my mole removed and thought long and hard about it and put the time in to research where to go as it is a big deal when it's on your face. I made the right decision! Incredibly professional, did a wonderful job and really helpful with the aftercare. This is a 5 star review as it was a 5 star job. If you're thinking about braving it, get it done. So happy with the results!"

"I thought I would wait a few weeks before doing a review, so I could give a proper account. I had a Seborrheic Keratoses growth on the side of my face that had been bothering me for 2-3 years. I had tried all the usual creams to no effect. I decided to take the plunge and get it removed and opted for the clinic based on previous reviews. The whole process was very professional from start to finish, and the process, and what I could expect, were clearly described to me. Four weeks later I'm wondering why I didn't do it sooner, it's also been a tremendous confidence booster. The process was quick and painless, and after a few weeks of healing it has all but disappeared. I'm very happy with the results. I will definitely go back for a few other bits and bobs that need sorting."

"Really fantastic experience. It can be nerve-wracking coming along for something like this (lesion removal) but Dr Georgios was incredibly sensitive, kind and thorough in explaining my options and I felt very reassured and relaxed throughout. I didn't feel a thing during the procedure and it was all so easy and efficient! The nursing and admin staff were fantastic and friendly too. Highly recommended and I'm so glad I made that booking!"

"Super efficient and reliable. Before even going to my appointment my emails and queries were replied to very quickly. I went to have a mole removed and the environment was so friendly; Angelica the receptionist was so welcoming and both the assistant Kay and Dr Sarah made me feel very comfortable. The procedure was quick and all of my questions answered. I know I can come back should anything go wrong. Would definitely recommend!"
