What is mole mapping?
Mole mapping is the most thorough mole-screening service we offer. It combines high-resolution total-body photography with high-magnification digital dermatoscopy of every atypical mole. Both sets of images are stored securely and re-used at future appointments to identify even subtle changes over time, changes that no naked-eye examination, however expert, can reliably detect.
It's the gold standard for patients at elevated melanoma risk: a personal or family history of skin cancer, fair skin, more than 50 moles, atypical naevi, or major sun exposure. Annual mapping with side-by-side comparison is the single most powerful tool for catching melanoma at its earliest, most treatable stage.

Understanding mole mapping
Mole mapping isn't a different kind of mole check, it's a different timescale. The advantage compounds at every follow-up.
The early stages of melanoma are often the most diagnostically difficult. A mole that looked unremarkable last year and now sits 1mm larger, slightly more asymmetric, with a faint border change, can be the earliest visible sign of malignancy. But that comparison is impossible without a baseline. Memory, even an expert clinician's memory, isn't precise enough to detect millimetre-scale change across hundreds of lesions.
Photography solves this. A standardised total-body record, plus close-up dermatoscopic images of every atypical mole, gives the clinician at your next appointment something the human eye cannot otherwise have: a precise side-by-side comparison. Subtle change becomes obvious in the gap between two images that wouldn't be obvious in either image alone.
For high-risk patients, family history of melanoma, more than 50 moles, atypical naevi, fair skin with significant sun exposure, annual mole mapping with photographic comparison is the single strongest tool currently available for catching melanoma at its earliest, most treatable stage.
There are two kinds of image taken at every mapping appointment. The first is a set of standardised total-body photographs from set angles, anterior, posterior, left and right lateral, plus close-ups of areas with high mole density (back, chest, legs). These provide an overview record of the position and rough appearance of every visible lesion on your body.
The second is a high-magnification polarised dermatoscopic image of every atypical or borderline mole identified during the appointment. Each dermatoscopic image is tagged to its body location so it's instantly findable at the next visit. Routine, clearly-benign moles are not individually photographed.
Total imaging time is around 30 minutes within a 60-minute appointment. The remainder is consultation, examination of any specific concerns, and discussion of findings.
Imaging takes place in a private, climate-controlled room with the door locked. A chaperone is available on request, and is required by default for any photography of intimate areas. Underwear stays on throughout; anywhere covered by underwear is photographed only on specific clinical request.
Images are stored on a UK-based, encrypted clinical image server. Access is restricted to your treating consultant and the clinical team responsible for reviewing your case. Images are never shared with third parties, never used for marketing or training without specific written consent, and are retained for the period required by UK clinical record-keeping regulations.
You can request a copy of your images at any time, and you can request deletion subject to clinical record retention obligations.
At every annual follow-up appointment, the previous year's images are pulled up alongside the new ones. Total-body shots are compared first to identify any new lesions or any moles whose overall appearance has shifted. Each atypical mole that was previously dermatoscopically photographed is then re-imaged and compared close-up.
Where AI-assisted comparison tools are available we use them to flag candidate changes, but the final read is always done by a consultant dermatologist. Software accelerates the comparison; it does not replace the clinical judgement on whether a change matters.
Anything dermatoscopically suspicious at follow-up is escalated immediately, typically to same-day full-thickness excision and histology, with no separate appointment required. The whole point of mapping is that a flagged change is acted on the same hour.
Who it's for
01
A first-degree relative (parent, sibling, child) with melanoma significantly raises your own risk.
02
Previous melanoma, basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma, annual mapping is strongly recommended.
03
High mole count is a quantifiable melanoma risk factor and the case where photography pays off most.
04
If you have moles that are unusual but not removable, photographic monitoring is the safest approach.
05
Skin types I–II, history of childhood sunburn, frequent tropical holidays, or sun-exposed occupation.
06
Even without elevated risk, mapping is the most precise possible record of your skin's current state.
What to expect
Brief skin and family history, discussion of your specific concerns, and an outline of how the mapping process works.
Standardised photographs of the full body in a private, climate-controlled imaging room. A chaperone is available on request.
Every atypical mole is photographed at high magnification with a polarised dermatoscope. Each image is tagged to its body location.
Personalised report with full findings, recommendations and stored images. At follow-up, side-by-side comparison flags any change.
Pricing
Mapping starts at £250 for a single appointment. Annual follow-up appointments include side-by-side comparison with your stored baseline.
If excision is recommended at the time of mapping, the relevant excision fee applies in addition. Histology costs are charged separately by the lab.
Your consultant
Photography is performed by trained imaging staff. All images are reviewed and reported by a GMC-registered consultant dermatologist, never by a technician alone.

"Thank you Dr Reza and Kay for being amazing. I've always wanted my mole removed and thought long and hard about it and put the time in to research where to go as it is a big deal when it's on your face. I made the right decision! Incredibly professional, did a wonderful job and really helpful with the aftercare. This is a 5 star review as it was a 5 star job. If you're thinking about braving it, get it done. So happy with the results!"

"I thought I would wait a few weeks before doing a review, so I could give a proper account. I had a Seborrheic Keratoses growth on the side of my face that had been bothering me for 2-3 years. I had tried all the usual creams to no effect. I decided to take the plunge and get it removed and opted for the clinic based on previous reviews. The whole process was very professional from start to finish, and the process, and what I could expect, were clearly described to me. Four weeks later I'm wondering why I didn't do it sooner, it's also been a tremendous confidence booster. The process was quick and painless, and after a few weeks of healing it has all but disappeared. I'm very happy with the results. I will definitely go back for a few other bits and bobs that need sorting."

"Really fantastic experience. It can be nerve-wracking coming along for something like this (lesion removal) but Dr Georgios was incredibly sensitive, kind and thorough in explaining my options and I felt very reassured and relaxed throughout. I didn't feel a thing during the procedure and it was all so easy and efficient! The nursing and admin staff were fantastic and friendly too. Highly recommended and I'm so glad I made that booking!"

"Super efficient and reliable. Before even going to my appointment my emails and queries were replied to very quickly. I went to have a mole removed and the environment was so friendly; Angelica the receptionist was so welcoming and both the assistant Kay and Dr Sarah made me feel very comfortable. The procedure was quick and all of my questions answered. I know I can come back should anything go wrong. Would definitely recommend!"
