What is mole mapping?

Photography that remembers what skin can't.

Mole mapping is the most thorough assessment we offer. At our London clinics — Harley Street and the City — a consultant takes systematic photographs of the entire skin surface, then dermatoscopes every mole that warrants detailed imaging. The result is a full digital record of your skin, stored securely, that can be compared image-by-image at every annual review. Subtle change is what melanoma looks like early; mole mapping is the tool built specifically to catch that.

We recommend mapping for London patients with high mole counts (more than fifty), atypical-mole syndrome, a personal melanoma history, a first-degree relative with melanoma, long-term immunosuppression, or simply a strong childhood sun-exposure history. Both clinics use the same equipment and the same dermatopathology team where biopsies are needed, so the answer to "which London clinic" is whichever fits your day.

The first session takes about 90 minutes and produces the baseline. Annual follow-ups take 45 minutes and focus on side-by-side comparison: anything that has changed since baseline is examined more closely on the day. There is no upcharge if a lesion needs immediate excision — we book that into the suspect-mole pathway at the same fixed fee.

Understanding mole mapping

How a photographic record changes melanoma detection.

Mole mapping isn't a different kind of mole check, it's a different timescale. The advantage compounds at every follow-up.

What photography sees that the eye misses

The early stages of melanoma are often the most diagnostically difficult. A mole that looked unremarkable last year and now sits 1mm larger, slightly more asymmetric, with a faint border change, can be the earliest visible sign of malignancy. But that comparison is impossible without a baseline. Memory, even an expert clinician's memory, isn't precise enough to detect millimetre-scale change across hundreds of lesions.

Photography solves this. A standardised total-body record, plus close-up dermatoscopic images of every atypical mole, gives the clinician at your next appointment something the human eye cannot otherwise have: a precise side-by-side comparison. Subtle change becomes obvious in the gap between two images that wouldn't be obvious in either image alone.

For high-risk patients, family history of melanoma, more than 50 moles, atypical naevi, fair skin with significant sun exposure, annual mole mapping with photographic comparison is the single strongest tool currently available for catching melanoma at its earliest, most treatable stage.

Who it's for

Mole mapping is recommended if any of these apply.

  • 01

    Family history of melanoma

A first-degree relative (parent, sibling, child) with melanoma significantly raises your own risk.

  • 02

    Personal history of skin cancer

Previous melanoma, basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma, annual mapping is strongly recommended.

  • 03

    More than 50 moles

High mole count is a quantifiable melanoma risk factor and the case where photography pays off most.

  • 04

    Atypical / dysplastic naevi

If you have moles that are unusual but not removable, photographic monitoring is the safest approach.

  • 05

    Fair skin, significant sun exposure

Skin types I–II, history of childhood sunburn, frequent tropical holidays, or sun-exposed occupation.

  • 06

    You want a definitive baseline

Even without elevated risk, mapping is the most precise possible record of your skin's current state.

"Excellent service, and care. I had a wart removal on my eyelid, procedure was quick and pain free (even that I was a little bit scared). Dr Mohsan, Kay (assistant), Aoife (receptionist) were very professional and reassuring. I highly recommend this clinic."

"Thank you Dr Reza and Kay for being amazing. I've always wanted my mole removed and thought long and hard about it and put the time in to research where to go as it is a big deal when it's on your face. I made the right decision! Incredibly professional, did a wonderful job and really helpful with the aftercare. This is a 5 star review as it was a 5 star job. If you're thinking about braving it, get it done. So happy with the results!"

"I thought I would wait a few weeks before doing a review, so I could give a proper account. I had a Seborrheic Keratoses growth on the side of my face that had been bothering me for 2-3 years. I had tried all the usual creams to no effect. I decided to take the plunge and get it removed and opted for the clinic based on previous reviews. The whole process was very professional from start to finish, and the process, and what I could expect, were clearly described to me. Four weeks later I'm wondering why I didn't do it sooner, it's also been a tremendous confidence booster. The process was quick and painless, and after a few weeks of healing it has all but disappeared. I'm very happy with the results. I will definitely go back for a few other bits and bobs that need sorting."

"Really fantastic experience. It can be nerve-wracking coming along for something like this (lesion removal) but Dr Georgios was incredibly sensitive, kind and thorough in explaining my options and I felt very reassured and relaxed throughout. I didn't feel a thing during the procedure and it was all so easy and efficient! The nursing and admin staff were fantastic and friendly too. Highly recommended and I'm so glad I made that booking!"

"Super efficient and reliable. Before even going to my appointment my emails and queries were replied to very quickly. I went to have a mole removed and the environment was so friendly; Angelica the receptionist was so welcoming and both the assistant Kay and Dr Sarah made me feel very comfortable. The procedure was quick and all of my questions answered. I know I can come back should anything go wrong. Would definitely recommend!"
